Gate types we build

Walk gates (4ft standard)

The most common gate. Our contractors build to match the fence style — board-on-board, shadowbox, aluminum ornamental, chain link. Heavy-duty Stanley hinges, locking or non-locking latches. Self-closing spring available for pet/child containment.

Pool gates (self-closing, self-latching)

Alabama pool code requires specific hardware: D&D Technologies MagnaLatch above 54-inch height, TruClose self-closing hinges, outward swing. Our contractors install pool gates that pass inspection on the first visit.

Drive gates (10ft–16ft)

Single-leaf or double-leaf vehicle gates. We size the opening to your equipment — a 12-foot gate fits most pickups; a 14-foot gate is needed for trailers; 16-foot for tractors with implements attached. Hardware scaled to the gate weight.

Equipment / tractor gates

For farm and acreage properties. 16-foot or larger openings, heavy-duty hinges, sometimes wheel supports for very large gates. Our contractors build to handle real working equipment, not just appearance.

Automated driveway gates

Solar or hardwired operators (LiftMaster, FAAC, Linear). Slide or swing depending on driveway geometry. Wireless keypad, remote, and smartphone-app entry. Our contractors install the gate; an electrician handles the power run if needed.

Custom builds

Arched-top gates, ornamental scrolls, mixed material gates (wood frame with aluminum decorative inlay). Built on-site or in our shop depending on complexity.

Hardware that lasts vs hardware that fails

Hinges: heavy-duty, not residential-grade

Our contractors use Stanley heavy-duty strap hinges or D&D TruClose tension hinges. Residential-grade hinges from chain stores look identical but are rated for lighter loads. On a 4-foot walk gate with a 6-foot privacy panel, residential hinges sag within 18 months. Heavy-duty hinges last 10+ years.

Latches: D&D Technologies for pool, Stanley for general

For pool gates, D&D MagnaLatch is the industry standard — magnetic, vandal-resistant, code-compliant. For general gates, Stanley keyed or thumb-lever latches in heavy-duty grade. Cheap residential latches stick, rust, and break.

Gate frame: reinforced corners

The gate frame itself needs corner reinforcement to prevent racking (the gate going out of square over time). Our contractors use mitered corner braces or metal anti-sag kits on every gate over 3-foot wide. This is the #1 reason gates sag — racking, not hinge failure.

Gate post: 6-inch diameter, 4-foot deep

Gate posts carry the full weight of the gate plus dynamic loads from opening/closing. Our contractors use 6-inch diameter posts set 4 feet deep in concrete (vs 4-inch posts at 30 inches for fence posts). On large drive gates, gate posts are 8-inch or larger.

Automated gate operators

Our contractors install automated gate operators on driveway gates. Common configurations:

Swing operators (LiftMaster LA400PKGUL)

Best for single-leaf or double-leaf gates with straight, level driveways. Solar option available. Smartphone control via myQ. Adds $1,800–$3,500 to a manual gate cost depending on configuration.

Slide operators (LiftMaster CSL24V)

Best when driveway geometry doesn't allow swing (steep grade, tight side clearance). Quieter than swing operators. Requires V-track or chain-drive system along the gate path. Higher install complexity.

Access control

Wireless keypad entry, RFID card readers, smartphone app, voice intercom. Our contractors install entry hardware and tie into the operator. Network connectivity is the homeowner's responsibility (we can recommend an integrator).

UL325 compliance

Automated gate operators must meet UL325 safety standards: entrapment protection, secondary safety devices (photo-eye or edge sensors). Our contractors install to UL325 spec and document compliance. Non-compliant installs are a liability we won't take.

Gate FAQ

How much does a walk gate cost?

$200–$500 for a standard 4-foot walk gate with the matching fence style and heavy-duty hardware. Pool gates with code-compliant hardware run $400–$700 because the hardware adds $200–$400 over a standard latch set.

How much does a driveway gate cost?

Manual single-leaf 12-foot driveway gate: $800–$1,800 including the gate, hardware, and posts. Manual 16-foot equipment gate: $1,200–$2,400. Automated gates (gate + operator + access control): $4,000–$8,000+ depending on complexity.

What goes wrong with gates first?

Almost always sagging from racking (gate going out of square). The hinges look fine — the problem is the frame itself. Heavy-duty corner bracing and an anti-sag kit prevent this. Latches are the second wear point, especially exposed metal latches that rust in our humidity.

Can I add a gate to my existing fence?

Yes, usually. Our contractors assess the fence section where the gate will go to confirm post spacing and frame strength. If the existing posts aren't strong enough, we replace them with proper gate posts. Most gate retrofits are 1–2 day jobs.

How long does an automated gate operator last?

Quality operators (LiftMaster, FAAC) last 10–15 years before any major component failure. Solar-powered systems have shorter battery life — 3–5 years between battery replacement. Smartphone control modules become obsolete faster than the mechanical operator.
